Sleep well without (!) mosquitoes

  • 3 min read

August 20 is World Mosquito Day. Not to honor those pussies, but to counter them. Because mosquitoes... they really don't help us! Dalai Lama once said it very aptly: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito." Everyone measures exactly what they are talking about. Mosquitoes are annoying and unfortunately can also be deadly. That's why attention is paid to how you can fight these annoying critters.

Deadly?

Indeed, the mosquito is by far the deadliest animal in the world. The malaria mosquito (Anopheles maculipennis) is the best known and deadliest. The parasite that the mosquito spreads causes about half a million victims every year, mainly in Africa. But not only this mosquito, other species also spread dozens of diseases with ease.

For us here in the Netherlands, mosquitoes are 'fortunately' especially annoying. If you live close to freshwater, you're out of luck, because the aforementioned people also like to live there. Last summer vacation we stayed, like every year, for a week in a house with friends. The house had a beautiful garden complete with swimming pool and ... large frog pond. You guessed it: mosquitoes all over the place. We have been hunting until the wee hours for a number of nights, nevertheless our son has been punctured quite a bit.

Nothing to make you happy. Here are a few tips against mosquitoes, for a good night's sleep and to prevent bumps.

Tip 1 - Mosquito net

Mosquito net against mosquitoes

Drape a mosquito net around your bed and keep those dripping sticks (and spiders) away. Mirjam also gave this tip to sleep better. Check the blog post: 5 Useful sleep tips for restless sleepers . In the case of mosquitoes, you can do that if you keep the bastards out with this, but the 'bed tent' you create with it also gives you a sense of security. For less than €30 you already have a nice double mosquito net. TravelMore - €29.99

Tip 2 - Use citronella

Citronella aroma has a fresh citrus scent and is known for its anti-mosquito effect. There are many products with citronella, such as Hibi 10 minutes aroma citronella for example. Perfect for sizzling summer evenings on your balcony or garden. But also very suitable for lighting before going to sleep. Then you can immediately read a few pages in a book and dream away. maison KOOS - €10,-

Tip 3 - Kill 'em with... a lamp

TIKKENS Mosquito Lamp - Mosquito Catcher

Mosquitoes can make you furious, luckily you can do a lot to prevent the misery. Also very effective: screens on windows and doors, using sprays with DEET, a fan aimed at your bed and mosquito lamps. With a good mosquito lamp you no longer suffer from annoying buzzing around your head. The anti-mosquito lamp attracts not only mosquitoes, but also other insects, so you can sleep carefree! Ticks - €39.99

In this way I hope that you can still sleep wonderfully in the last tail of the summer without buzzing and pricking. Good night!
