A personal story becomes a worldwide success
On February 4th, 2000, Will Wright introduced us to a game world that would become much more than just a game. It all began with his own personal loss - after his house burned down in 1991, he became fascinated by the way people rebuild their lives. That fascination became the spark for what would become a worldwide phenomenon.

Those unforgettable moments
And what haven't we all been up to in that virtual world? From building dream homes (where you probably secretly spent more time decorating your Sim's living room perfectly than you did your (home)work) to creating complete family dramas. Who doesn't remember the first time a Sim accidentally set the kitchen on fire while making a simple fried egg? Or that time your favorite Sim fell in love with the neighbor, when that really wasn't the intention?
From pixels to perfection
The Sims has guided us through four main games and countless expansion packs. From the crude, pixelated graphics of the first game (where that pool without stairs was still an acceptable 'solution' for unwanted guests) to the lifelike emotions and relationships in The Sims 4. Each game brought its own innovations: The Sims 2 introduced aging and genetics, The Sims 3 gave us an open world, and The Sims 4 refined the emotional depth of our virtual friends. But the real secret to its success? Perhaps it was the freedom to tell your own stories. The game became a mirror of our dreams, desires, and sometimes even our darker tendencies.
More than a game
After 25 years, The Sims is more than a game—it’s a cultural phenomenon that has influenced generations. It’s taught us about relationships, responsibility (who knew watering a virtual plant could be so educational?), and yes, even architecture. All those hours we “wasted” trying to perfectly style a virtual bathroom? They may have helped shape our own taste and style.

As a Simmer myself, I can’t help but be happy about all the ‘Sul sul’ moments and ‘Dag dag’ memories I’ve collected. And whether you’re a seasoned player who knows every expansion pack inside and out, or someone who occasionally dreams away for an hour in a self-built virtual paradise - we all share that special bond with this unique game. It has given us something magical: the freedom to play with life itself, to tell stories and make dreams come true (even if it’s only in pixels). And whether or not there will be a The Sims 5 soon, it will continue to do so for a while. Because the real magic is not in new versions or updates, but in the endless creativity of all players who continue to write new stories in their own, perfect Sims world, day after day.
