We have been celebrating Sinterklaas evening since the 13th century and the first arrivals of Sinterklaas were organised in the early 1900s. Many people still celebrate Sinterklaas and there are also plenty who do nothing about it. Often the annual tradition ends when the children 'no longer believe'. They then pick it up again when they have small children of their own. Because even now you can still celebrate Sinterklaas evening, probably with a nice soot-smeared Piet and a lot of other fun must-haves that should not be missing on December 5th. Make a wish list now!

Here are some must-haves for a super cozy Sinterklaas evening for you and everyone who is just (again?) going to celebrate Sinterklaas:

  1. Sinterklaas songs
  2. Santa Claus's bag
  3. Hot chocolate
  4. Santa and Black Pete
  5. Santa Claus gifts
  6. Sprinkles and other goodies

1 - Sinterklaas songs

With Sinterklaas songs from your speakers you will get into the mood. Check out this fun, old-fashioned Spotify list. Sing along!

2 - Santa Claus's bag

The bag of Sinterklaas is a real essential . The original, the old-fashioned bag of Sinterklaas , is made of jute. And do you know the nicest bag of Sinterklaas ? This bag is specially made for the Princess Máxima Center . Where 100% of the net proceeds go to the Princess Máxima Center Foundation for research into childhood cancer.

3 - Hot chocolate

On the 'holy night' it should actually be freezing cold outside. When it's stormy and chilly outside, nothing beats a cup of hot chocolate. At Happlify we swear by Spicy Aztec Chocolate Milk and here you can find the recipe.

4 - Santa and Black Pete

To top it all off, you can of course invite Santa and Piet, but in these strange times you can also do that online via Skype or let Santa record a video message where he has placed the presents. Do you already know Video van Sint ? That is really highly recommended!

5 - Sinterklaas gifts

And last but not least a lot of presents to unwrap together and have fun. Draw lots online in advance and then make a nice surprise and a funny poem. The dice game is also always popular where you have your eye on a certain present but if you are unlucky you will lose the present again. Lots of fun and laughter guaranteed. 6 - Sprinkles and other goodies

To make your Sinterklaas evening even more complete, you should not miss the following sweet treats: chocolate letters, frogs and mice made of fondant covered in chocolate, old-fashioned gingerbread nuts, marzipan in all kinds of shapes, banket letters (extra tasty if they have been warmed up for a while) and gingerbread figures.

Tips for celebrating Sinterklaas

Special gingerbread nuts

Did you know that in addition to the regular sprinkles, there are now many other new flavors of kruidnoten?! What do you think of the flavors crème brûlée, carrot cake, cookie dough and discodip... and that is just a small selection from the assortment of special kruidnoten that you can get nowadays. At Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery you can order the strangest kruid- and pepernoten, but you can also shop for them offline in one of the many stores in the Netherlands.

Laat die noten maar komen. Die overleven niet lang.
