Will you join Whamageddon? 2021

  • 2 min read

The Whamhalla, there you are if you've heard 'Last Christmas' at least once per December 1st and are participating/aware of Whamageddon. As a Christmas fan, the chances are as good as the entire North Pole that you will be there with us in the first week of December... (and you can just put Last Christmas on repeat again).

Whamageddon?!

Whamageddon is a challenge/game played during the Christmas season where the player must try not to listen to 'Last Christmas' from Wham! from December 1st to midnight December 24th. If as a player you do hear the popular Christmas song within that period, you are out and you have to post #whamageddon on social media (with photo) to indicate that you are finished and no longer participating.

🎉 EXTRA FUN : also post the hashtag #whamageddon_nl

Exceptions to this game are remixes and cover versions of the song, which are allowed and not counted. While this is not encouraged on the Whamagaddon website , but is allowed, one player can send the song to another player or otherwise try to make the other lose it.

The Whamagaddon rules in a nutshell:

  1. no 'Last Christmas' from Wham for as long as possible! listen
  2. the game starts at midnight December 1 to 24 every year (home time zone)
  3. only the original counts, remixes and cover versions don't count
  4. you're done if you recognize the number
  5. post #whamageddon on social media when you're done

Yup, I was long off #whamageddon

How did this madness start?

One of the first versions of Whamageddon appeared in 2010 on the online internet forum GTPlanet, under the name 'GTPlanet vs. wham! - Last Christmas'. In 2016, the game was renamed Whamageddon and the rules were established.

We've been here at least 13 times already, this year alone. But I don't know if that counts because we only just now know about the game… Somehow I also regret participating because this Christmas hit is so 'Christmas ' makes. The great thing about Christmas carols is that you turn them gray within 30 days, then vomit all over and not hear them for 11 months, and then make them merry as new.

So this misery is allowed

Movie tip: Last Christmas

In 2019 'Last Christmas' the movie came out, completely stuffed with George Michael music. So be warned: it is a real Christmas movie, so wrong, cliché and bland. But if you go with a bunch of girlfriends, wine, beer and M&Ms, you'll have a very pleasant evening! Here at Pathé's home you can rent and watch Last Christmas online.

WARNING : After watching you can Instagram #whamagaddon right away. Even if you watch this trailer by the way 🤦‍♀️
