Why is that one Christmas movie so special?

  • 6 min read

Christmas movies... we can't get enough. The time in which we 'can' watch them is actually much too short to see all the favorites again every year. Because: where do you get the time from? And they are so much fun, those movies like The Polar express, a Christmas Carol, The Grinch who stole Christmas, Scrooge, Santa Claus, Home Alone and so on I could go on and on.

A real Christmas movie immediately gives you the Christmas Spirit , that nice, happy feeling. That bell of carelessness, coziness and fuzziness. Which movie exactly gives you that has a lot to do with the past. Your own past, of course. Every family has its own traditions and around Christmas that often goes hand in hand with watching that special Christmas movie.

That's why I asked on Instagram a few weeks ago "What's your favorite Christmas movie ALL time?" and that resulted in very good answers, often with even better memories.

Below -in no particular order- 6 must-see Christmas movie tips complete with story, trailer and link to watch right away.

The Holiday

Karin's favorite Christmas movie is The Holiday .
In short: Amanda is an American who is experiencing some problems in her relationship. To get away from all this nagging, she exchanges her house for that of an unknown Englishwoman during the holidays.
Actors: Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Jude Law

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
I believe with my husband who was just my boyfriend at the time. He had to get acquainted with my Christmas madness right away!

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
The story, the English landscape, the music of Hans Zimmer. I have the CD of this movie. The music is really magical!

3 - Anything else you want to say about it?
Yes, really let the music guide you. The music really makes this movie so special!

Nathalie's favorite Christmas movie is Serendipity .
In short: The film (from 2001) is set in snowy New York. Sara and Jonathan try to figure out if true love is destined.
Actors: John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven, Molly Shannon

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
I first saw the film with an ex-boyfriend. That was about ten years ago, but since then I watch it every year during Christmas.

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
I also believe in fate and that everything in life happens for a reason. What's meant to be, will be...!

The Wizard of Ozo

Marieke's (from Keshi studio ) favorite Christmas movie is The Wizard of Oz .
In short: When a neighbor tries to put Dorothy's dog Toto to sleep, she takes him and runs away. However, they are picked up by a tornado that takes them to the magical land of Oz.
Actors: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
At Christmas we (just like half of the Netherlands) always went gourmet. My father would then fill the burners with spirits, part of which always fell next to them and everything smelled of spirits. And of course all the other cliché problems with the gourmet...sticky/burnt pancakes and so on. It didn't make the party any less because the best thing was that my parents put the dining table, which was normally in our kitchen, in the living room near the television. Such a thick tube with 10 buttons, read 10 channels... That evening The Wizard of Oz would be on television. My mother had talked about it many times before, so expectations were high. I think I was about seven years old and couldn't read the subtitles that quickly, so I didn't understand anything about the film. But I was impressed by one thing and that was the Ruby red slippers from Dorothy. Of course I wanted that too!

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
"There's no place like home." - Dorothy. This film just has a super nice memory of the Christmas eves in the house where I was born, being with my parents and brother. I have watched the film many times over and the great thing is that those old memories always come back. I just smell the spirits again just thinking about the movie hahaha...

3 - Anything else you want to say about it?
Even though this movie seems dated, I think we can still learn a lot from it. The lion seeking courage, the tin man seeking a heart, Dorothy seeking the way home... They are all looking for a wizard who can do this for them, but in the end they all turn out to be all these qualities long ago. to possess, only they themselves have yet to become convinced that they have it or lack it. And that wizard doesn't actually exist. A beautiful story about how you can do more if you just believe in yourself. I think it's important to keep telling these and other stories. Not only because they are beautiful but also because they touch us and give us an insight into ourselves and the world around us. I grew up with movies of all shapes and sizes. Now I work in a movie theater and I still think the best thing is that people are still (and more than ever) looking for stories and dare to be touched and amazed. What will the Christmas movie be in the movie theater where I work? ... 3 guesses ;-)

Love Actually

Simone's (and Daphné's) favorite Christmas movie is Love Actually .
In short: This romantic comedy tells 10 intertwined London love stories leading up to Christmas Eve.
Actors: Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and many more!

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
With a friend at home.

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
A combination of enjoying that wonderful run-up to Christmas with that intense feeling of happiness from that scene at the end at Heathrow with that beautiful song by The Beach Boys in the background. I often leave a tear of happiness here.

3 - Anything else you want to say about it?
This film is watched every year in December, while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and the Christmas lights on the Christmas tree. How wonderful (and easy) that the film has recently been released on Netflix!

White Christmas

Sasja's favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas .
In short: Two artists team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. One winter, they join forces with two talented sisters and head to Vermont for a white Christmas.
Actors: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
At home when I was about 12 (1982), presumably on Christmas Eve on television. Was with my father, mother and sister.

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
The humor, the jokes in the lyrics, the actors, songs, the dancing. And then when the snow falls during the song 'I'm dreamin' of a white Christmas', they stand there in their red Christmas outfit and the doors of the barn open... instant feel good, keep hope, when you work together come there and finally ultimate Christmas feeling!!

3 - Anything else you want to say about it?
White Christmas is a real Christmas classic in 50's musical dance style.

Serana's favorite Christmas movie is Elf .
In short: Buddy the Elf discovers that he is different from the other elves of the North Pole, so he travels to New York to visit his real father and spread some Christmas cheer.
Actors: Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bod Newhart

1 - Can you remember when you first saw the movie (and with whom)?
I don't know exactly the first time, but it has become a regular thing to watch Eleven every year (I would prefer to watch this film all year round haha)! Sometimes also cozy on Boxing Day when there is a moment of rest between the food and the gifts! Delicious!

2 - What makes this film so special to you?
This movie really gives me the Christmas spirit with the funny moments, the music, the Christmas spirit, etc. As soon as this movie is set up I'm in Christmas mode!

What a wonderful row. Thank you Karin, Nathalie, Marieke, Simone, Sasja and Serena for sharing your favorite Christmas movie and special memories. Have a very Merry Christmas with your favorite! ❤️
