The bedroom as the ultimate chill spot - 5 tips

  • 4 min read

We love sleeping, cocooning, Netflixing and all the other things the bedroom is perfect for. Especially now that there is such a storm, there is almost nothing better than curling up in a thick row of pillows, an extra blanket and snacks. To chill like a boss in your bed, here are five great tips for a wonderfully relaxed bedroom. Enjoy!

Tip 1 - Create atmosphere with color

Even though it is usually dark in the bedroom, if you rest with your eyes open, it is still nice if you make it an atmospheric place. And you can do that relatively easily with a color on the wall. In Happlify your life on page 38 you can read that color does a lot to your state of mind. It is not for nothing that mint green is brushed on the wall in hospitals, the color that is extremely soothing. And red may be the color of love, but it has also been proven that you are more irritable in a red room. Not such a relaxed color for your chill bedroom. With green-blue tones you are fine when it comes to soothing.

Tip 2 - Fragrance

A good smell in the bedroom goes a long way. Because smells are inextricably linked to our emotions. You can also read much more about this in the Happlify book . If your bedroom has a subtle soothing scent (e.g. lavender) you will feel more at ease in it. As if the smell is passing on to your brain: this is the place to rest. This fragrance concept can be further extended to other rooms, giving your home a real experience. For example, give the kitchen an energizing scent such as orange or grapefruit. That's nice waking up in the morning with breakfast!

Tip 3 - Invest in a lovely bed

If you do plan to hang out in your bed more often, make sure you have a good bed. One that really wakes you up rested. Nowadays there is a lot of choice when it comes to beds, slatted frames and mattresses. But if you really want to enjoy a good and high-quality bed for a long time, which also looks nice in your room, then it is best to buy a box spring . These are wonderfully firm, solid, timeless beds for years of enjoyment. Box springs can now be put together completely according to your own taste. Top the bed with extra decorative pillows to match the color theme of the room and a fun, trendy bedspread. This makes it a wonderful place to rest from a long day of work and read a book.

Tip 4 - Read before going to sleep

There's no getting around it: the last half hour before bedtime is the best time to read for many people. No crowds around you, just you and the book on your bedside table (and maybe a sweet partner next to you, who probably also has a nice book to read). So make sure you always have a book on your bedside table. Also a nice bonus is that you often fall asleep faster after reading a book. It's a lot better for your eyes and brain anyway than spending the last fifteen minutes scrolling through your phone. So read more. Highly recommended! And not as difficult as you think. Look in your bookcase, choose your most beautiful gem, block a time in your agenda and enjoy!

Did you know that there is a reading lamp that promotes sleep? The lamp filters blue light and that seems to stimulate sleep. Useful! Available via - Woodro LED Reading light €21,95

Tip 5 - Netflix & chill

Whether you have a TV in the bedroom or watch with a laptop or tablet, Netflix and cocooning in your bedroom are a match made in heaven. Do you have the luxury to do nothing for a weekend? Then binge a fun new series like this one: Inventing Anna .

This new mini-series by Shonda Rhimes (producer of, among others, Grey's Anatomy, Bridgerton and How to get away with murder) is as we speak at number 1 in the Netherlands. The series is about the true and super bizarre story of Anna Delvey who about five years ago turned the entire New York society upside down. Julia Garner (also known from Ozark) stars as the stars of the sky.

Bonus tip : when you think of chilling, you don't immediately think of rules. Still, there is one rule I want to give you: ban the phones from the bedroom. Why? I would like to tell you that in the Digital detox .

Long story short : make that bedroom even more cozy and make it your own hide out. This way you can relax when you need to. Because it's super relaxed that 'the world is opening again' of course, but just when everything is allowed again later, it is good to keep a balance and to seek peace every now and then.
